Italian Rowing History
Rowing has been played in Italy since the ancient times thanks to its large water resources.
One of the first competitions between boats was the “Gran Regatta”: it was held in Venice for the first time in 1315 during the public games created by the local governor and still takes place every year in early September. Later rowing delevops more and more and in 1861 the first Italian rowing club was founded. At the end of 19th century Turin became the main place in Italy for rowing and here the International Federation (FISA) was founded in 1892.
Last decades have seen Italy being among the strongest countries of the world like United Kingdom, United States and France. Trophies won during last world championships and during last Olympic games in Athens can prove it.
Among our most famous athletes there are the Abbagnale brothers who for several years have dominated the international rowing competitions.
